Memorial Day is coming up quickly, and the options of where to visit are many. Whether you’re planning for a staycation or vacation, you want to plan ahead to make sure you have accommodations and travel arrangements that work for you and your travel mates. If you’re on a budget, you’re like most people but it’s not too late to put together an affordable trip over the holiday so you can take advantage of the three-day weekend. Here are some recommendations on where to spend Memorial day on the cheap!
National Parks: There are 58 parks in the United States, making it so almost anyone has an option within driving distance. Some require advanced reservations for campsites, but if you waited too long, you can still consider a visit for the day. National parks offer beautiful scenery, inexpensive river rafting and hiking. Even if you just want to eat a picnic lunch with a view, consider a national parks trip for fun family memories within a few hours of home. Read our recent article on visiting the national parks for more ideas!
Catalina Island, California: With a boat ride now taking less than two hours, or the choice of a helicopter ride if you want to spend a little more money, Catalina Island is a great place to spend the day. Ride in a glass-bottom boat, drive the curvy roads to see island wildlife or enjoy a delicious buffalo burger on the shore, viewing the docked boats, maybe some shopping, and hop back on the boat to be home in time for bed!
Lake Tahoe: Surrounded by beautiful views and a lot of access points, Lake Tahoe offers a variance of activities as wide as the weather on both the north and south ends. Boating, water skiing, snow skiing, shopping and nightlife, or just barbecuing at a park, Lake Tahoe can be an affordable place to spend the holiday and recharge.
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina: Myrtle Beach is a resort area on the northern end of South Carolina, just a few miles from the North Carolina border. Miles and miles of hotels, from budget to high-end, intermingle with restaurants, miniature golf courses, gift shops, boutiques, indoor events (like museums, MagiQuest, etc.) and malls offer inexpensive activities for everyone. Whether you go for a day or all three, you can expect it be crowded but there’s always enough room to lounge on the beach and enjoy the soft sand. (We also have a location at Myrtle Beach airport for your convenience!)
Las Vegas, Nevada: Not always considered as a family destination in the past, this has changed significantly over the last decade. Vegas now offers many activities, events, shows and venues for the younger set. Parents can still try fun, famous chef meals and nightlife without having to get back into the car for the whole weekend. Hotels range from cheap to fancy, and there’s always the Hoover Dam tour and science museums if you want to get away from the busyness.
