San Diego, California, is a city like no other. Located at the southern end of the long state, it is a large city on the coast and consists of a number of various neighborhoods. Rolling hills, wide open spaces, residential developments and the most temperate climate in the country makes it appealing to many, and it’s a popular travel destination year-round. It’s a city you could easily stay in for a week and never run out of things to do, but if you only had 72 hours in which to explore, what would you see first? Here is a list of things to consider. Time it right and you can get to them all!
At the top of the list if you have a family is La Jolla Cove. La Jolla Cove offers a beautiful coastal terrain with places to park (with meters or paid parking, both of which can be a little tough on busy days, so plan ahead) and explore the shores. The area is known for its wildlife, particularly sea lions. You could spend hours watching them frolic together and sunbathe on the rocks, but if you are in a hurry, an hour will suffice.
Directly across from here is the San Diego Convention Center, the site of a lot of conferences and business events is the Gaslamp District. Known as the historical heart of the city, it is full of restaurants, night clubs, even a speakeasy if you know where to look, shops and hotels. Some buildings are old and reminiscent of early San Diego, while others are newer and modernized. Public transportation is available, and there are a lot of parking lots but parking can be expensive, so parking at your hotel may be a cheaper option to consider.
Balboa Park is a must-see. It’s 1200+ acres of gardens, theaters, museums, picnicking area and architectural views. Some museums are more family-focused than others, but be sure to stop by the Fleet Science Center for a treat. There is also a dog park!
The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is over 1400 acres of over 300 animal species exhibits. It is a peaceful sanctuary which affords guests the opportunity to see rare animals live happily amongst the hills and trees similar to their original environments. Saving animals and educating the public, the park is a fun place to spend a day or several hours.
If you’re into sports, there are stadiums for all the sports you can think of, and if you want to participate yourself, water sports and hiking are readily available. San Diego is a city we recommend highly, and the longer you have, the better, but if you only have 72 hours, you can appreciate it fully and want to come back again!
